Praying for a Change: Embracing God’s Heart Amidst Election Uncertainty — Heidi St. John

November 2nd, 2024

Well, we’re here.

We’ve arrived at the proverbial “jumping off place” for our state, our city and our nation. If you haven’t voted, now is the time to vote. If you have voted, now is the time to pray and trust God for the outcome, knowing that you have done your part.

There is so much on the line this year—and I want to remind you, as we come into the home stretch, that God is still on His throne. Many of us are tired of the political season. If you’re tired, I want to encourage you today.

After all, God’s Word has instructions for weary citizens.

While we wait, God says..

Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!”  Psalm 31:24

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” Romans 12:12

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” 1 Thess 5:11

If our candidate or position loses, God says..

“I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Phil 4:12-13

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” Deut 31:6

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”  James 1:12

If our candidate or position wins, God says..

“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”1 Cor 15:57

“Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!” Psalm 115:1

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things.” Psalm 72:18-20

Here’s the point—whether this election goes in a way that brings blessing or burden to our nation, God will still be on His throne. He’s still worthy of our praise, still trustworthy, still good, still kind—and still able to carry us into the next season.

No matter what this world brings to our door, we are called to praise the Lord. Our role after Tuesday’s national election remains the same: to be ambassadors for Christ.  We are His hands and feet.

What a privilege to know the One who holds all things in His hands.  Give your worries to Him today. He can handle it.

In prayer and humble expectation of seeing God continue to do good things,
Heidi St. John
