FPHRC Spotlight: The Nutcracker Dance + Drama Collaboration — Alexa Kehler
Last month we had the wonderful blessing to give our students the opportunity to dance in a Nutcracker production. It was the first time our dance department and drama department (costuming, sets, and crew) all partnered together to put on a performance. From great dancing and beautiful costumes to creative sets and an engaging storyline, it was fun for the whole family while still taking time to focus on the real meaning of the season–our Savior, Jesus, and His birth.
Our number one goal is to bring honor to God in all that we do. When we are not busy with teaching Sugar Plum Fairy pointe dancers, hip hop robots, tap dancing candy canes and a hip hop dance battle between mice and toy soldiers, here at the Resource Center we are so blessed to be able to have the privilege and opportunity to share the gospel in our classes. We encourage our students to do this through dance, as well as in their class behavior and attitude.
Our music choices, show themes and Bible verse memorization are a few ways that we are able to encourage our students towards living a life of faith. We seek to offer quality instruction in a variety of genres, while encouraging excellence in technique and beauty in artistry.
We also offer a mentorship program by providing opportunities for teens who are excelling in these areas to learn choreography, dance theory, leadership and class management skills. They can start as a class assistant, move up to student-teaching and then may eventually become an adult teacher with us in the future.
We are constantly looking for ways to improve our program here at the Center. We offer reasonable prices for our classes and have implemented a costume rental program which allows a greater possibility for participation for families who may have several students taking classes. We are also always looking for more teachers who want to join us. The styles of dance that we currently offer are:
Ballet (including pointe)
Tap
Lyrical
Contemporary
Hip hop
Jazz
and Worship.
In the past we have also had swing, social and jazz dance.
We are currently working on our Spring Show, “Moses and the God Who Delivers”. We look forward to sharing with our students the truths of hope and salvation; that the same God who rescued His people out of Egypt also sent Jesus to rescue us all.
If you didn’t have the opportunity to see our Nutcracker Shows, below are the links where you can view them now. Enjoy!
Note: There are two videos. It is overall the same show but there are some different classes in either show. Show A | Show B
