FPF Stories: Rediscovering My Identity Beyond Motherhood — Megan Douglas

I joined Firmly Planted in 2020 during a challenging period in my life. As a new mother in an unfamiliar area, I found myself feeling lost and isolated, especially with the restrictions imposed by COVID-19. In my search for activities that would allow me and my son to engage with others who shared our values, I discovered Firmly Planted!

I began my journey in the Seedlings program and soon progressed to teaching sewing in the Arts Department. Additionally, I had the opportunity to create costumes for the theater club, which was a significant blessing during a time of personal struggle. Through these experiences, I rediscovered my identity beyond motherhood and reignited my passion for the things I love. I wasn’t just “Mom” but Megan again!

Several years later, after the birth of my youngest child, we made the decision to enroll my oldest in public kindergarten on a trial basis. Unfortunately, we found the environment and support within the school district lacking. Our primary concern about transitioning to homeschooling was whether he would receive adequate social interaction. Fortunately, my existing involvement with Firmly Planted allowed us to swiftly switch to homeschooling, and my son is now thriving. He participates in PE, ceramics, and attends Friday school, where he has formed friendships and eagerly anticipates his time at the Center. His younger brother has also begun taking classes and is enjoying the experience as well.

Firmly Planted has offered more than just educational opportunities for my children; it has become a community where we truly feel at home. We are incredibly grateful for this support and network from the Firmly Planted community!
