FPF Stories: It's Our Norm to Get the Door – Matt Ernster
In a society where prescription medications are commonly prescribed, boys are often treated as if they are merely being given candy, such as Tic Tacs, in an attempt to "calm" them down so they will sit still and behave like their female counterparts. As a result, the physical aspect of physical education has been diminished because activities that involve the words "sweat," "hard work," and “losing” are involved. Games like tag and dodgeball have disappeared from playgrounds across the United States, and boys are being told that girls can open their own doors and do not need assistance. It's no surprise that boys are becoming passive and submissive, and the only risk-taking occurs in online video games. This is not what God intended!
A while back, an opportunity arose for me to coach boys wrestling at the Center, and both boys and parents eagerly expressed their interest. They sought a physical outlet for their sons' high energy and a chance for boys to be boys. Since its inception, what began as a small initiative has blossomed into a thriving group of over 115 wrestlers at Firmly Planted. It’s more than a sport; it’s helping the boys realize their potential and grow into the men God designed them to be.
Wrestling captivates the boys and draws them in. Recently, a mother mentioned that her son was nervous about being late on the first day, so he slept in his t-shirt and shorts to ensure he wouldn't be late and face pushups. This was adorable, especially since I wouldn't enforce tardiness with pushups on the first day. However, the boys need to understand that when expectations are set and standards are raised, they must rise to the challenge. This structure and discipline are crucial elements of our practices, ensuring that every boy has the opportunity to grow and thrive.
Wrestling is a sport that holds a special place in the heart of God. Jacob wrestled with an angel towards the end of Genesis 32. This sport challenges boys aged 6 to 18 and encourages them to embrace the difficulties and awkward moments that come with it. Wrestling is not an easy endeavor, but it also brings the exhilarating feeling of victory after hard work. I have witnessed many young wrestlers face physical and emotional struggles, and through this experience, they begin to understand and embrace their identity in the eyes of God.
Like Jacob, these boys show their dedication on the mat, giving their all—whether they are 6-year-olds wrestling like teddy bears or older teenagers competing with fierce determination. One thing is certain: just as Jacob received God's blessing, these boys and their parents are rewarded for their faithfulness.
Although wrestling is primarily an individual sport, it also emphasizes teamwork. This is where you come in as we support one another in striving for God's best. The next time you step into the center, please take a moment to thank the boy who opened the door for you.
